A Thrush in the Ferns (Closed)

Fernstep padded towards the apprentice den to wake up her friend. Thrushpaw’s mentor was a little busy so she was taking her friend out for some battle training. As Fernstep neared the apprentice den she wondered if she was even ready to train an apprentice. “Thrushpaw, time to train.” she mewed into the apprentice den and waited at the camp entrance for thrushpaw to come out.

Thrushpaw was groggy- she hasn't slept well, the cold at night had been worse than the mornings, and it crept through her nest and into her skin. As she awoke, she felt like sharp icicles were prodding at her, and she tried to shake it off as Fernstep woke her up. Wait- Fernstep is taking me- oh right. "Hey, okay. Brindleface busy with leader stuff?" She asked, before a yawn overtook her.

The crisp air was just as bad as the previous night, making the cat a bit dissaproving of this, but knew it had to be done. Training time. "What've you got planned? Oh, and how's Patchpaw? He woke up before me I guess. You two doing well?"

She looked down at her friend in amazement. “Yes she is busy, we will be teaching you how to battle, Patchpaw is good, and yes we are doing well.” She mewed with a hint of a blush on her brown fur. They padded off to a clearing that was found on the moors, it was the perfect place to battle as no one would be hunting around here. “So, what do you know so far?” she asked the apprentice as she sat down.

Thrushpaw liked how down to business she was in her replies- it made conversation easier for her. "Good, good." They walked together to the clearing, and with a humph, the she-cat pounced onto a tall rock, laying in the grass. It was cold.

"Well, let's see. I haven't really done much battling with Brindleface yet. Mostly just kit-stuff." She talked nonchalantly, embarrassed that at this rate in her apprenticeship she was so inexperienced. It was no fault of Brindleface's though- her being so busy provided much boredom for the she-cat, she should have practiced more alone.

“Well first before I teach you any battle moves, let’s teach you how to fool your enemies.” she said. “Now can you tell me what the three main rules of fighting is?” she asked looking at thrushpaw on her rock.

Thrushpaw nodded- it made a lot of sense. "Well I know one from the Code, of course. Never kill another cat when fighting unless absolutely necessary. I can't really think of the other two?" She blinked hard, a little embarassed that she couldn't think through it. Her frustration really didn't help her current mood.

“The second one is too never aim for the eyes, that’s a low blow for every cat. The a third is never take your eyes off the enemy.” She mewed with a smile.

Thrushpaw nodded, a bit embarassed she'd forgotten them. "Alright," she began, breathing in and out slowly. She kneaded her claws on the cold earth, anticipation heightening.

“The first move I’m going to teach you is to use your claws. Every experienced cat knows great ways to use them. Let me show you.” she said and looked around before spotting a tree. She unsheathed her claws and slashed at the tree.

Thrushpaw nodded, watching intently as her older friend cut the tree quickly with her claws. Glancing down at her own paws, she noted that hers were thicker and less sharp than Fernsteps. She flattened her ears down, a bit insecure, but walked next to her. She stood quickly on her hind legs and dragged her claws across the tree quickly, making shallow cuts into the tree.

“Very good, it’s good to keep your claws sharp and clean Incase of any battles. The best way to do that is sharpening them on trees or rocks. Now let’s teach you how to use your teeth. It’s quite simple, all you need to do is latch on to your enemy.” she said then looked around. She spotted a stick and picked it up, biting down on it.

Thrushpaw nodded, noting that. Ah, Fernstep noticed. Yikes. She shook her head quickly before doing just the same. She found another stick and jumped onto it, biting hard.

“Now us windclan cats have our own special move, but I’m going to let your mentor teach you that one. Do you want to spar to see if I need to give you any pointers?” she asked.

"Sure!" Thrushpaw chirped, spitting out a bit of splinters from the stick. She'd bit through it from biting it so hard, and she regretted it deeply. But she was really excited to spar- she'd never done it past the nursery with her friends before.

Fernstep circled her and looked for an opening to strike.

(We can do First one to 0 health if you want, since fern has more health it could be once someone hits 0 they are tired out and stop)

(OOC - How about 10 HP instead? I think 0 is technically dead haha)

Thrushpaw put all of her weight back into her haunches. Staring down her friend, she smirked before allowing her mouth to open as she jumped. She landed paws first onto Fernstep, biting down onto her neck softly, but enough to stun her.

Thrushpaw used Bite, dealing 4+1 (5) Damage to Fernstep

Thrushpaw wriggled away, hissing under her breath in frustration. She growled low, playfully yet firm, and tackled her, pinning the older she-cat down by her shoulders. The burly apprentice's size was a clear advantage here, and she overcame her easily.
