Warm southern rains had rinsed the territories of their continuous dusting of snow and ice, leaving behind a sodden mess of standing water and slowly decaying foliage that had been concealed beneath the uncompromising weight of ice. Although it made slogging through the worst of the lingering water and cold mud quite unpleasant, the brief reprieve in cold weather had offered the chance to send out as many hunting patrols as possible. Sensitive underside effectively drenched in foul waters, Brindleface gave herself a brisk shake as she turned to look at back at her hunting companion for the afternoon.

She gave her pelt a rough shake, she was far from fond of the rain that had drenched her lately, although the humidity provided was much better than the icy wind that had plagued them a few days before. Padding deftly after her mentor, she met her gaze with a steely determination to catch as much prey as possible - all she wanted was to feed her clan after all.

Heronpaw raced ahead of Brindleface, head tilted upright to take in the scents beyond the smell of rain and damp undergrowth. The faint, taunting scent of a rabbit caught her by surprise, and she peered around in sight of it.

There! And without further ado, the molly gently, but rapidly padded towards it, before breaking into a sprint. Excitement pulsed through her paws as within heartbeats she found herself leaping atop the rabbit, delivering a killing bite to its neck. Grabbing it in her jaws, she looked around for Brindleface, wanting to show off her catch. A whole rabbit!

There was a soft clicking sound in the air as Brindleface worked the worst of the residual stiffness from her shoulders, quiet enough to be effectively smothered by the low drum of background noise that seemed commonplace in such bleak territory. Sharp gaze watching as Heronpaw pursued the rabbit and successfully brought the impressive creature down, the former Deputy redirected her attention out to the open grounds before them. "Well done," She praised quietly, mindful that the hunt still had to continue, "See if you can bring down another piece before we head back to camp."

She dropped the rabbit onto the ground gently, nosing it into a crevice in the moorland before nodding at Brindleface, happiness coursing through her veins at her first catch. She wouldn't let herself become overconfident - she hoped. "Okay! I'll make you proud," Heronpaw purred, attempting to pick out another scent.

Was that a squirrel? On the moor? What a strange world, but prey is prey! The bright orange caught her eye, almost as if it were no more than a smudge on the landscape - a bleak, monotonous moorland that she loved with all of her heart. Shaking her head, the mottled she-cat stalked forward, remembering to keep herself downwind of the squirrel, and attempting to stay out of sight. Lucky for her, it was too busy scraping at the ground, and it barely had time to let out a shriek as she leapt and trapped it under her paws, giving it a killing bite.

Thank you StarClan for this prey, a purr moved through her chest as she carried the rather scrawny, now she had a closer look at it, squirrel back towards her mentor. "Should we give the rabbit to the queens when we get back? I think they'd enjoy sharing it," she queried, voice slightly muffled around the squirrel she had so luckily caught. Heronpaw began to pad happily back to camp, her tail flicking in content at what she had caught.

It wasn't exactly unheard of for the occasional stray squirrel to wander out onto the moor, but it was still a rather bizarre sight to behold- even more so when Heronpaw managed to bring down the little creature, despite her lack of experience in hunting such prey. Still, Brindleface was pleased with the overall success of the brief outing; it wouldn't be long until Heronpaw was able to earn her Warrior name. She hadn't trained an Apprentice since Breezepuddle, so it was exciting to see Heronpaw making such progress. Retreiving the rabbit which had been hidden away during the remainder of her apprentice's hunt, the former Deputy took up a brisk pace as she hurried to join the younger she-cat on their return to camp.

"I do think they would enjoy it, especially the kits." Brindleface's voice was muffled by the thick muscle and flesh held between her teeth, "Especially the kits, it's been a few sunrises since they've been able to have anything other than rodents and birds."
