Coalspark padded excitedly out of the camp, her brand-new apprentice in tow. She looked back at Sootpaw, eyes sparkling. "Do you have anything you'd like to try hunting in particular? The prey is plentiful, we have plenty of options! Try to see what you can smell," the warrior meowed.

Sootpaw lowered her head to sniff the ground, "I think I smell a mouse, but its scent is kind of faint. I assume it...just ran past this place, probably hiding in the shrubs ahead. There are also many toads here; they are croaking all around." She tried to leave the best impression for her first training.

The black warrior nodded, trying not to be overly excited. Sootpaw definitely was insightful. "Try to go for the mouse, they're pretty easy," she murmured. "You'll want to try to get low to the ground, and do your best to stay in dry spots so you don't make too much noise, and go slow so the prey doesn't hear you," Coalspark instructed, remembering her escapades with Vetiverpaw and Berrypaw. "Once you're within a couple of tail-lengths, pounce on it. Don't play with it, make it painless and say thanks to StarClan for the food," she explained, sitting back against a tree to watch how her apprentice would handle the task. It was doable on instinct, but experience was necessary to know what to work on specifically when practicing.

Sootpaw nodded and crouched down. As she slowly approached the source of the scent, the shape of a small mouse emerged from a shrub. Her eyes widened and she held her breath. The mouse was washing its tiny face, barely noticing a shade of black coming. In a moment it was pinned under a pair of white paws, squeaking in horror. A bite quickly ended its misery. Sootpaw carried the mouse back to her mentor, almost skipping. Her eyes shined with pride and the joy of victory.

Coalspark cheered, grinning widely. "Good catch! You're a natural," she mewed proudly, excited at how visibly talented her apprentice was. "Come, let's try and get a couple more pieces of prey each before we head back to camp, yeah? I'll keep an eye on you." The black she-cat stalked off, tracking a mouse when a hissing sound made her pause mid-step. "Ow!" she yelped, swatting frantically at the snake that was suddenly attached to her hindquarters. "Sootpaw, help me out here!"
