Minnows and moths (closed)

It was a cool morning. Well early morning. Minnowstream figured it would be the best time to train. And while she would've preferred to be sleeping to sun-high like how the apprentices and her fellow younger warriors would have, Minnowstream knew that she had to get her apprentice to become a warrior before anything happens to him like how something happened to Icepaw.

Minnowstream padded towards the apprentices den where her apprentice most likely was."Come on Mothpaw. I hope your ready." Minnowstream called, peeking her head into the apprentices den. While it was most likely she probably woke up some of the other apprentices, it really didn't matter to her. She just needed to get her apprentice and not worry about her clanmates.

Mothpaw had been dozing peacefully, his thick fluffy coat keeping him nice and warm among the other apprentices. His ears twitched and he blinked awake at Minnowstream's call. He clambered to his paws with a stretch, dragging himself into full wakefulness. Carefully skirting around his fellow apprentices, to avoid waking them, Mothpaw made his way out of the den. "I'm ready! What're we doing first?" Any lingering sleepiness was flushed away with the surge of excitement, Mothpaw gazed up at his mentor in anticipation.

"Well looks like someones excited." Minnowstream commented. "I was thinking we could head down the river. I can teach ya how to catch a fish and swim." Minnowstream turned her gaze towards the camp entrance. She padded towards it and turned back to her apprentice. "Race ya there turtle!" She said cheekily.

Mothpaw squeaked in excitement, catching fish and swimming! Swimming was going to be so fun! Water had been a bit alarming when he first discovered it, but after getting over his initial confusion and unease, the post-rain puddles in camp had become his favorite playground as a kit. He padded after Minnowstream and, at her sudden challenge, wordlessly broke into a sprint, as fast as his young and inexperienced legs could carry him.

Minnowstream bounded to the river, glad to see her apprentice was following not far behind. Once they reached the river, she skidded to a stop and turned around to face him. "Ok Mothpaw. Go on into the water. I want to see how well you can swim." Said Minnowstream, walking into the river just a bit.

There was just so much space outside of camp! As he chased after Minnowstream to the river it was almost overwhelming how much more existed than the confines of the camp. Though it wasn't too far of a journey, Mothpaw was a bit out of breath by the time they reached the riverbank, not used to running for extended periods. "Uh, okay!" he panted.
Mothpaw walked down the sandy bank to stare at the moving water. The water was so... big. And.... moving. Cautiously he stepped into the shallow running water, feeling the gentle current tugging at his thick fur as he waded deeper. It was certainly different than splashing around in a sun warmed puddle; deeper and colder. When the water rose up to his shoulder his paw slipped on a loose pebble and he stumbled, fully submerging him in the water. He resurfaced a moment later, flailing his paws wildly in an uncoordinated attempt at swimming.

Minnowstream followed her apprentice into the river, to see he was struggling. "Move your paws around like your running! Don't put them so close to the surface!" She called to him, swimming towards Mothpaw. "Your thick fur should allow you to float easier."

Amidst his wild flailing, Mothpaw tried to follow Minnowstream's coaching; he managed a slightly more coordinated and rhythmic paddling. It was a vast improvement from his initial splashing though still lacking in any grace or efficiency, and every few jerky kicks his face would briefly dip under the surface leaving him snorting and blinking water out of his eyes.

"Your doing better." Said Minnowstream."Ok lets try catching fish. Its easier for me to be swimming in the water when catching fish. When you see a fish duck down into the water, close to where the fish is. Open your jaws and try to grab the fish? Ok?"

OOC: So uh do you know how the hunting system works?

"Y-yeah, I can try," Mothpaw gasped as he paddled to keep his head above the water. He struggled to peer below the rippling water surface, searching for a fish. Adrenaline surged through him as he caught sight of something dark, he dropped under the water, snapping his jaws shut where he thought it would be. He pushed off the bottom of the river to quickly resurface, sputtering out water around the thing between his teeth. All but purring with the excitement of his first catch, Mothpaw clumsily made his way back to the shallows. He'd caught a fish!!

As soon as his paws touched the bottom, he hauled himself out of the water and dropped his prize on the bank. "I did it!" he breathlessly called to Minnowstream, "I got a fi-" Mothpaw trailed off and deflated as he looked down. Instead of a nice, juicy fish, a small stick sat on the sandy bank where he'd dropped it.

Minnowstream let chuckled at Mothpaw's catch. "Ok how about we do something more basic. Come on. Lets go to a more shallower part of the river." With that Minnowstream bounded off to a shallower part of the river.

"Okay!" Mothpaw chirped, he shook himself to quickly shed some of the water off his pelt before bounding after Minnowstream. Who knew training would be so hard?

Minnowstream bent down by the river. "Ok crouch down near the water. Once you see a fish scoop it up with your paw. Observe." With that Minnowstream looked through the river. She spotted a fish. She swiped her paw at it, scooping it up. "Ok now you try." She said, setting the plump fish beside her.

Mothpaw stared in amazement as Minnowstream easily scooped the fish from the water. It just looked so easy. He settled on bank next to her, mimicking her posture as best he could, paw quivering over the water in preparation. Wide green eyes gazed into down into the clear water as he waited. A fish came into view, unaware of any potential danger, and Mothpaw struck, trying to scoop it from the water as Minnowstream had demonstrated....

If possible, Mothpaw's eyes widened even further as he managed to pulled the small, but still decently sized, fish onto the shore."I did it!" his voice was shrill with excitement.

Minnowstream tapped Mothpaw on the back with her tail for his excellent catch. "Good job!" She congradulated him. "Now how about we take our catches back to the camp. I bet all your friends would be jealous."

Mothpaw glowed with her praise. "Yeah! I'm gonna show Leopardpaw! He'll think it's so cool!"

Minnowstream grabbed the fish she caught with her jaws. "Race ya back!" She challanged, her mew muffled by the fish. She then ran off towards camp.

He briefly startled as Minnowstream grabbed her fish and took off, but quickly gathered himself. Mothpaw snagged his fish between his teeth and awkwardly raced after her, holding his head high to try to keep the flopping fish tail from tripping him.
