Herbs, Ferns, and Soft Clouds {Closed}

Softpaw stretched in her nest, blinking open her wearing away. She yawned and stretched her maw wide, breathing in the crisp, herby scent she adored. She picked her way over to the stores and nosed around. What she found made her frown. That's hardly enough for leaf-bare! She thought miserably. She sighed and decided on which herbs to look for today. Chickweed for sure. Burnet and chervil would be useful. Ragweed and snakeroot wouldn't hurt to gather, and they could always use cobwebs. Yes, that's what they'd gather. Now, who to take with her? A patrol has smelled signs of a fox, and Softpaw didn't have any plans to be eaten by a fox any time soon.

She exited the medicine den and padded over to the apprentice's sniffing the air. She sighed, only scenting one apprentice in the den. Fernpaw. Softpaw didn't particularly like Fernpaw, as they didn't get along. Still, Softpaw would have to put her own personal feelings away for the good of the Clan. "Fernpaw? Are you awake?" The pale cream she-cat called.

Fernpaw looked at the apprentice den with a glare. “Ya I’m awake, what do you want?” she asked with hatred in her voice. Fernpaw never liked softpaw ever since softpaw accused her of stealing herbs when she was a kit.


(Oof lets hope they don’t kill each other)

Softpaw frowned. She still held a grudge against the apprentice for hiding the catmint from her and lying when she was a kit. Catmint was precious! "I'm going out herb hunting, but Swiftstream wants someone to come with me. The dawn patrol yesterday scented fox. Apparently, all the other apprentices are out on patrol or training so I guess you're stuck with me." She explained.

"C'mon, I'll explain what we're looking for on our way to the flower fields." Softpaw began to pad away towards the camp entrance.

Fernpaw got to her brown paws and padded after softpaw. Maybe this was a good time for the two to actually, maybe, become friends. The thought of hating the one cat that would heal her was horrible, even to the clan. Her friends kept urging her so may be this is the right moment.

"Okay, we're looking for burnet, chickweed, cobwebs, chervil, ragweed, and snakeroot." Softpaw told the brown tabby. "Chickweed has fat almond-shaped leaves, Chervil has large leafy fern-like leaves and white flowers. Those are both round among rocks and in crevices. Ragweed has ragged-leaves and are found in rocky places. Snakeroot is found in warm areas and is a plant with small clusters of white flowers. Burnet will be easy to find in the flower meadow, they are oval-shaped serrated leaves with clusters of flowers. Cobwebs are the easiest to find." Softpaw explained.

Fernpaw nodded. “I can go get some cobwebs and chervil then come back to you.” She mewed.

"Right, while you're there, keep an eye out for Chickweed, chervil generally grows near it, you might also find ragweed. I'll go look for some burnet and snakeroot. Meet back here after you gather some." Softpaw nodded and padded off in search of the herbs.

Fernpaw padded away to look for the chervil first. She looked around rocks and crevices until she found them. Then she looked around for some ragweed.

Softpaw had padded away to find some burnet. She'd been so distracted looking for herbs, she didn't smell the stench of fox getting strong and stronger until... Softpaw screamed running fast, her opponent giving chase. The red fur kept up with her pretty well but she had a couple mouse-lengths on it. "FERNPAW!" She yowled desperately.

Fernpaw looked up with herbs in her mouth to see softpaw running towards her with a Fox trailing afterwards. She quickly got in the fighting stance.

As soon as Softpaw reached Fernpaw she jumped and got into a stance beside her. She growled, hoping to intimidate it.

The fox paused as two small she-cats turned to fight it. It hesitated before growling and lunging forward

Fernpaw pounced on the Fox and bit down hard on it’s fluffy neck.

Softpaw hesitated. She wasn't trained to fight! She was a medicine cat! But if she didn't, Fernpaw might get hurt. How would she live with herself if she allowed another cat to get hurt? Simple. She couldn't. Even though she was terrified and inexperienced, she yowled and lunged for the fox. She wasn't stupid. Fernpaw had gone it's scruff, so she'd go for it's tail. Her razor sharp fangs that were slightly longer than normal pierced the fox's white tipped tail and she didn't let go, not even when she tasted blood.

The fox squealed as the first cat fought back, it shook itself, attempting to dislodge the she-cat stuck to its neck. Its long, ugly muzzle snapped downward, narrowly missing the brown cat's ear. It was about to make another attempt and almost had it when a yowl rang through the air and less than two seconds later, sharp fangs bit down hard. The fox screeched in agony and spun rapidly, knocking the tabby clear off. It growled menacingly at the pale she-cat chomping on its tail, and then lunged at it, not giving that cream colored cat enough time to react.

Fernpaw got flung off the Fox and looked at softpaw as she attacked. When the Fox almost got ahold of softpaw Fernpaw got mad and pounced back into the fight ranking her claws across the creatures face.

Softpaw gasped as Fernpaw was flung away, and flinched as the fox lunged at her. Surely she wouldn't die like this? Fernpaw yowled and lunged at the fox, raking her sharp talons across its ugly face. Softpaw took the moment to rear up, and slam her paws down as heavily as she could on the fox's back. She nipped its ears before jumping off. Strategy was better than just full on attacking. She leaped over the fox, then dashed to the right. She unsheathed her short claws and raked its tail. Then she darted back and rushed to the left. She took a risky move and darted underneath the confused creature, then shot up like a bullet. "Fernpaw! Copy me! Confuse it by running in different directions and striking!" Softpaw yowled to Fernpaw, darting away from the fox's muzzle.

As the fox lunged for the cat, the brown one came back and raked her claws over its face. It howled with pain and rage. Half-blinded by blood, it was about to snap back at the feline when the other cat slammed down on it and knocked the air out of its lungs. Winded by the attack, the cat was able to nip its ears and scramble away before the fox was able to recover. The fox spun as the pale cat leaped over it. It lunged for her, but she darted to the right and raked its tail, though it didn't hurt as much as the other cat's claws. The fox lunged right but then the cat darted back. The fox pushed forward and lunged, but the cat predicted it and moved left! In the heartbeat it took to recover, the pale cream cat had ran beneath the fox and surged up quickly. The fox, winded, feebly snapped at the clever creature but it jumped back. The pale cat yowled something to the brown one, but the fox couldn't make it out. It hunched over and spat, sizzling with rage.

Fernpaw ran around the Fox like softpaw did and bit, scratched, and nipped when the time came. She was starting to get tired but knew any sign up weakness meant death for softpaw and her.

Softpaw was exhausted. She darted in and out, looping between Fernpaw and the fox, striking at random. There was no pattern between the rushing and striking, it was all random. And the fox couldn't keep up with two WindClan apprentices rushing in and out. Softpaw heaving, lungs burning. But she kept going. If she didn't, Fernpaw and her would both die. And she wasn't going to let that happen just yet. With a gasp of relief, she watched the fox turn tail and dash away. They did it! They really did it! But her excitement evaporated quickly as she ran towards Fernpaw, "Are you hurt anywhere? Bites, scratches, any bleeding?" She fretted.

The fox had had enough. These two cats were much too fast for it and they attacked at random intervals. The prey wasn't worth it, and the fox could easily catch something that wouldn't fight back. It yowled and broke into a sprint, turning tail and fleeing from the two she-cats.

Fernpaw fell to her paws in exhaustion and looked up at soft. “Just tired.” she mewed trying to catch her breath. That fight was scary but she was always excited cause she had won her first fight.
