Patchpaw Hunting #2 [SOLO]

Patchpaw had decided he was fed up of the bustling at camp, he needed to get out and DO something. He was so bored of being stuck in camp all day, he didn't mind taking care of the Elders, he believed it to be quite honourable. Those cats had served the Clan well, they deserved to live the rest of their days in relaxation.

He stretched out, and bounded out of camp. He loved the feeling of the wind pushing through his fur, he loved the sensation of the forest ground on his paws. There was truly no other way for a cat to live. He got down low, the Clan would need more fresh-kill, what better excuse to be out than getting food for the Clan?

Excitedly, he crept around sniffing wildly for anything delicious. He found that scent very quickly and edged closer to it, trying to control his heavy breathing.

Patchpaw saw a large raven pecking at the ground. His eyes widened, this would make an amazing meal for the Clan. Feathers to line their nests, meat to feed the elders. He pounced, landing on the bird. It quickly shook him off and flew away. Disappointed Patchpaw kneaded the ground out of frustration. 'Don't worry there'll be more prey, better prey to catch' he reassured himself.

He got back down and stayed there for awhile, his mistake with the raven had scared off some of the prey in the surrounding area. He sat there for what felt like moons, quietly waiting before he managed to pick up the delicious scent of prey.

Patchpaw saw a squirrel, it was already half-way up a tree but he thought he could reach it. He got as close as he could before launching himself up the tree and snagging the squirrel and quickly dispatching of it. Happiness flowed through Patchpaw, this squirrel was quite plump despite it being leaf-bare. It would make a hearty meal for the Queens. He buried the squirrel at the roots of the tree he had caught it on. 'Poetic', he thought.

More food was needed for the Clan, you can never have too much fresh-kill. He snuck around with an open mouth, to see if there was any other prey nearby.

Patchpaw saw a scrawny rabbit, it wouldn't feed many cats but prey is prey. He shuffled his paws in anticipation then pounced. The rabbit managed to hop away, leaving Patchpaw in it's dust. He attempted to give chase, running as fast as he could but the rabbit jumped into a burrow too small for Patchpaw to slip into. He curled his lip and whispered into the hole "I'll get you someday, then you'll be crow-food". He stalked off angrily.

He thought back to when he'd gone hunting with Fernpaw and chuckled to himself at how she'd somehow missed every rabbit AND pounced on a fox. He sat down and licked his chest fur before resuming the hunt.

Patchpaw spotted a mole, a rare treat! Moles were always plump from gorging themselves on worms and bugs underground. The mole was barely above ground so Patchpaw would have to act quickly before it sunk back below. He launched himself without care for sound at the mole. Somehow miraculously he managed to catch it, he finished it off with a quick bite then pushed some dirt over it.  

Patchpaw was considering heading back to camp but he didn't have nearly enough prey. He wanted to blow Fernpaw away with his hunting skills so he searched for something bigger and plumper.

Patchpaw kept low to the ground. He had seen a raven, poking his head up from the frosty undergrowth he realised it was the same raven from before! Determination gripped his belly. 'This stupid bird won't get away this time' he thought to himself. He launched himself at the raven. Unfortunately his pounce was off by only mere centimetres, he had ripped a feather out of the bird but not caught it. Once again the raven took flight leaving Patchpaw behind, he heard it cawing in the air, as if laughing at him.

Frustrated Patchpaw didn't want to head back to camp with only two measly bits of fresh-kill. So once again he lowered himself to the ground and began his search again.

Patchpaw scented another rabbit, creeping closer he hadn't realised how loud he was being. The rabbit ran off before he even had a chance to pounce.

Sighing Patchpaw realised his luck has ran out for today. He slowly walked back, grabbing his mole and squirrel and headed back to camp with a drag in his step.
