Morning again. As the sun broke through the trees, Sorrelwing padded out of the warriors den and stretched hard before walking to the apprentices den. "Lionpaw, let's go. It's time to get to training!"

Shockingly, for once the tomcat was awake, and he was excited. Due to Breezebranch being stuck in the nursery with his new siblings, he hadn't yet had the chance to go out and do much, and so to have the deputy calling him to train was very exciting. "I'm coming!" He called back, throwing one last stroke of his tongue down his shoulder. Lionpaw exited the den, his fur lighting up in the sunlight that streamed in through the gaps and spaces in the trees. He was warm, happy and full of energy, and eagerly followed Sorrelwing out of camp.

Sorrelwing let out a huff and a gave the apprentice a slight glare as he bounced out of the apprentice's den and followed her out of camp. She was not ready for this kind of energy. Apprentices were definitely not her thing. When they finally got into the middle of the territory, the deputy stopped and glanced around, trying to find at least a few fresh scents of prey before they began. She didn't want this training to be a bust. "Okay," she began, turning her attention back to Lionpaw. "Let's begin. First, let's see your crouch. If you're going to hunt, you have to do it properly."

He flicked his ear, ignoring her huff laced with annoyance as he padded after her, attempting to keep his pawsteps soft against the crunch of ice and snow that would echo underfoot if one was to stomp down harshly on it. Lionpaw thought back to his apprentice ceremony, when the deputy clearly hadn't thought about him much, but shook his head to clear those thoughts as she came to an abrupt stop after they'd travelled for a little while. Nodding his head at her instructions, he crouched down, feeling the snow lap hungrily at his belly fur as it brushed gently against the ground. The creamy tom was fairly proud of himself - so proud he forgot to bring his tail to a standstill, and it twitched occasionally, a betrayal of his excitement.

"Am I doing it right?" he asked sheepishly, hoping if he was doing something wrong that the deputy wouldn't make a big song and dance, and would be a little nicer about it. Oh, how he silently wished that it was Breezebranch currently here, not the molly who looked like she'd rather be anywhere else.

The Skyclan deputy looked the apprentice over, clearly not very impressed. "Keep your head straight, belly up, tail down. Make sure your paws are wide enough to get a solid stance. Can't catch anything if you're about to fall over when you make your leap." She padded around Lionpaw, batting his tail down and keeping it still before stopping back in front of the apprentice. "Here, like this." she crouched down, keeping her body low and streamlined, making sure her paws were far enough apart that she could keep her stance light and ready to pounce. Once she was set, the deputy stood like a statue for a moment before she relaxed herself and started sniffing the air. When she found a scent, she padded toward it until the prey was in sight. Resting on a lower branch was a small thrush, chirping away. "Okay, watch this," Sorrelwing whispered as set herself up, getting her body in the proper crouch before leaping high into the air. Before the bird even saw her coming, she snagged it with her claws and brought it to the ground, killing it swiftly. She glanced back at Lionpaw after burying her prey to save it for later. "Like that. Now, let's have you try it."

He fought off an irritated flick of his ears as Sorrelwing wreathed around him, commenting on his stature in a voice that was dipped in annoyance, and the creamy tom was left wondering what he had done - or what anyone had done really, to leave her in this mood. Nodding dutifully, he readjusted to the position she had suggested, finding within heartbeats that it was much comfier and he had a lot more room to leap. Rising out of his hunting crouch, Lionpaw listened and watched intently as the she-cat stalked the thrush, before killing it in one fell swoop, allowing it no time to release an alarm call. "Nice catch!" the tom purred, voice betraying the admiration that swam in his gaze - he wanted to do that, to hunt and provide for his clan with the same ease the deputy had displayed.

"Okay, I'll try!" Tilting his broad muzzle up to take in as many scents as possible, he pricked his ears for any scuttling in the undergrowth, now desperate to prove himself to this disapproving mottled she-cat. A robin chirped somewhere nearby, and he attempted to zero in on it. His eyes narrowed as he caught the orange tinge of the robin, and immediately he sank into the floor, paws gliding over the frostbitten ground as the tom figured the best way to reach it. The robin flitted onto a branch not high above him - he was sure he had jumped higher before - and so without further prompting, he leapt. The bird only had a few heartbeats to chirp in alarm before he dealt the killing blow, landing neatly on the ground with his catch in his mouth. "Lookf whaf I caughf!" the apprentice purred, eyes brimming with happiness at his first prey, and he placed it gently on the ground, spitting out a feather with it. "Thank you StarClan for this catch," Lionpaw murmured, before looking at Sorrelwing, whiskers twitching in excitement.

Sorrelwing's ears perked up as she watched her apprentice. "Not bad, not bad!" she mewed. "Now that you have a feel for it, let's see if you can fetch two more pieces of prey. Once we have enough to take back to camp, we will finish for the day!"

He nodded eagerly, padding a little ways away from the deputy, at once being hit by the strong scent of a squirrel. It was still small he noted, and his mouth salivated at the thought of digging his teeth into it later tonight, it was his favourite type of prey after all, and the cream tom fought off an excited chirp as it clearly had no notice of it's surroundings. Keeping his pawsteps light, Lionpaw creeped up behind it, grateful it was on the ground nibbling at an undetermined object, something that would keep it preoccupied as he reading himself. Drawing himself into the crouch Sorrelwing had helped to perfect, he leapt.

Relief flooded through him as his outstretched paws connected with the squirrel, and it's abrupt squeak was cut short as he dealt the killing nip to it's back, and he swiftly picked it up in jaws, fighting off the urge to bite down on it just to return it to Sorrelwing. The tom knew it wasn't a massively impressive catch, not like the robin, but it would still be prey for any of his clanmates - though Lionpaw definitely found himself hoping that it would get passed up on so he could enjoy it later that night. Reaching the mottled she-cat, he deposited the squirrel with the robin and sat back on his haunches for a moment, licking the smear of blood on his lips. "So, just one more?"
