A New Life (Open)

As the sun rose into the sky, smoke was sleeping in his little area that the clan decided for him. He had to stay in sight of everyone because some cats still didn’t trust him. As the sun shined on his face, her opened his golden orange eyes to the new sight in front of him. He was never inside a clan camp before and every time he opened his eyes it surprised him even more. The way everyone was organized and took care of each other was as shocking to him as the clan letting him stay. He got to his paws and stretched, aware that the clan would be waking soon. Lilypaw told him she was giving him the tour today so he knew his way around and for other clan members to meet him. He sat down and groomed his fur, waiting for lilypaw to arrive so he could get started.

Lilypaw had hurried out of the apprentice, den, excited to show her friend around. She now stood beside him. ”Ok, let’s start with the dens!” she mewed. She padded towards the nursery. ”This is the nursery, where all of the kits and queens sleep.” Moving on to the apprentice den, she said, ”This is the apprentice den. I sleep here with the other apprentices.” Soon they had reached the medicine den. ”This is where the medicine cat and their apprentice stay, also any cats who need to be healed come here.” They confused walking. ”This is the warrior den, for the warriors, and the deputy. My mom stays here.” Finally, they reached the leader’s den. ”This is for the leader, so right now, it is Silverstar.”

He followed after her in amazement at how big the clan was. He knew the queens wouldn’t let him near their kits so he kept following after lilypaw. The apprentice den was full of cats who were starting to wake up. He saw around six different bodies of fur and smiled at how lucky lilypaw was to know so many cats. As they kept walking he noticed some warriors were awake and looking at him. Some had glares while some had fear. He sighed when they passed the warrior den and lilypaw mentioned her mother. He was still healing from breezebranch’s attack the other day and knew he didn’t want to see her so soon after. When they got to the leader den smoke tried to see inside but it was too dark. “You have a big clan.” He mewed to her as they headed back towards his little area. He had to stay there unless accompanied by someone that wasn’t lilypaw. As he sat down he wondered what would happen to him if he accidentally slipped up and did something that they thought was bad.

Lilypaw smiled. ”It is pretty big. And over here,” she flicked her tail towards the prey pile. ”Is the prey.” she looked around for someone to meet her friend. Maybe Swiftpaw, or Mudpaw. She knew that her friends and family would love Smoke once they got to know him better.

Swiftpaw was walking out of the apprentice den as she just woke up when she saw her sister, lilypaw, with the strange cat from the other day. She padded up to them and nuzzled lilypaw in greeting before looking at the Tom. After looking at him she started to Flick her tail at smoke then looked at lilypaw with a weird face. She then hooked her tail tip with a confused look on her face.

Smoke saw a brown and white cat come towards him and stayed still. If he did anything wrong he would be kicked out or even killed. As the she-cat neared he saw her nuzzle lilypaw before looking at him. What did She want from him? Why was she just staring? Should he say something or wait until she spoke? so many questions were going through his head that he didn’t even realize when the she cat started doing some weird motion with her body.

Lilypaw atfhed Swiftpaw’s signals. ”It’s ok. He is my friend. He won’t hurt you.” she said to her sister. Turning to Smoke, she said. ”This is my sister, Swiftpaw. She’s deaf.” she explained to the tom, hoping everything would go well. She stood, watching to see if the two would get along.

Swiftpaw nodded then looked back at the Tom with a smile. She motioned with her tail in a greeting and then sat down in front of him. She was really curious on who he was and why he was here. He didn’t smell like a clan cat but didn’t smell like a Kittypet either. She watched the whole fight that happened the other day so looked him over for wounds.


Smoke watched as she waved hello then started to look him over. “I am ok.” he said to her slowly letting her understand what he said. He never met a deaf cat before so is wondering how she has survived this long. As he noticed, clan cats fight and hunt a lot, so how is she not dead.

Lilypaw watched them, smiling. ”Lets find someone else to meet. Maybe Mudpaw, or my mom, or Maplepaw?” she looked around for someone to introduce the tom too.

Muddy white paws padded into camp, carrying a very, very tired small grey tom. Mistedsong looked visibly exhausted, but Blizzardpaw's recovery from the rogue fight had been rocky, so he still had to take care of his own camp as well. He walked past the three young cats, barely even noticing them let alone acknowledging them, more focused on trying to keep his stomach from digesting itself now that he'd made it back home. He rubbed the mud between his pawpads off onto a rock before picking through the fresh-kill pile, glad to see that it had grown since the dead of leafbare. The medicine cat selected a reasonably sized mouse, taking it into his jaws and making his way towards his den. He paused outside of the entrance, pondering for a moment, before settling to the side and just outside of the entrance, wanting to soak up a bit of the sunlight now that it was a little bit warmer.

Mistedsong sat, glad to rest his aching paws, beginning to eat the mouse slowly so as to not upset his stomach, pale green eyes watching the young cats curiously now that he wasn't otherwise occupied. He was quite curious to see how this whole outsider thing played out, but he seemed to be friendly and remorseful enough. Watching the rogue for a moment, he remembered the blood that had been on the outsider's paws, realizing he'd never checked the cat for wounds as Silverstar had asked him to as he'd had to leave to take Softpaw to Highstones almost immediately in order to make it by nightfall. "Excuse me," he called, tail twitching behind him with a bit of unease at potentially startling the outsider. "You said your name was Smoke, correct? Were you at all hurt before you arrived?" the medicine cat asked curiously. Sorrelpaw had been a very newly named apprentice, so he wouldn't have been surprised if the rogue wasn't harmed by her, but he figured it best to check. Mistedsong felt a pang of guilt at the thought; he hadn't been very close to the younger cats lately, though, because he'd been so busy with two apprentices.

Smoke looked at his body than back at the medicine cat, Mistedsong was what he was called, and nodded slightly to his name. “When me and lilypaw first met I had a big scratch on my side and she helped the best she could. Other than that the only time I ever got hurt again was when BreezeBranch attacked me, those scratches weren’t that deep though so they healed fast.” He said to the medicine cat with a small smile.

Breezebranch's green eyes narrowed as she entered the camp from hunting. A squirrel was in her ginger and white muzzle, and when she saw Mistedsong speaking with the rogue her distrust of him sharpened. If he could kill an apprentice, he'd have no difficulties killing a medicine cat. Bringing Mistedsong prey would be the easiest way to get him away from that rogue without seeming hostile. Walking over to Mistedsong, she paused and set her squirrel down to give both Swiftpaw and Lilypaw a lick on the head. She nudged the squirrel towards Mistedsong. "Here, Mistedsong, this is for you and Blizzardpaw. You must be starving, traveling between two camps and highstones." She mewed in a friendly tone, as was natural for her when speaking with Clanmates.

"Lilypaw, have you seen Shrikepaw and Smallpaw? Sorrelwing requested that they accompany Hawkflight and Briarshine on the evening patrol. Oh, and if you see your littermates, tell them they shouldn't leave camp without at least one warrior. After all, it's dangerous out there." While mewing to Lilypaw, her last sentence was directed towards Smoke with hostility. Sorrelpaw had been her close friend Briarshine's daughter, and Smallpaw's sister. Briarshine and Smallpaw had been close family friends ever since Breezebranch had had her kits, and Briarshine had practically been a second mother to her kits.

Briarshine was also the only cat besides her kits who knew of her late mate, Mudmask. So it was only natural for the she-cat to hold an even stronger grudge against the tom. She resented the tom, actually, as his presence reminded her of the rogue who'd murdered her father. As she stared at Smoke, her shoulder fur began to rise involuntarily.

As her mother approached, Lilypaw was ready to let her get to know Smoke. Instead of confronting them, as Lilypaw expected, her mother offered the medicine cat some prey. Exhaling a sigh of relief, she turned to Breezebranch, but she had already started talking to her. ”Uh, no I haven’t seen them, and I will?” Th last statement hadn’t really seemed that it was directed at Lilypaw, the tortoiseshell she cat believed she was referring to Smoke. It was very harsh of her, to judge him without knowing him. She knew she had been close to Briarshine, Sorrelpaw’s mother, but still, she needed to meet him before making whatever assumptions she had made about him. She watched Breezebranch’s fur rise. ”Ok, I know you don’t like Smoke, Mom. It’s no mystery. But could you at least talk to him and get to know him before deciding to hate him?” she said, her voice rising angrily. It was unfair to Smoke. He had experienced so much, and to have who was probably the kindest cat in the clan hate him just because a rogue was too much.
