Practice Makes Perfect

The ground had finally mostly dried after an early morning rain, though a couple small puddles still remained dotted around the area. A cool breeze blew through the area, rustling the surrounding grasses. Mothpaw paced the training grounds, fluffy tail twitching in excitement while he awaited his sparring partner. He'd gotten all the basics down, so all that was left was to practice, practice, practice! And once he'd practiced enough he was going to be an awesome warrior!

"'M comin!" Shellpaw called out, voice muffled by the bits of fish he was still chewing on from his last meal. He huffed as he ran along the puddles of murky rainwater, swallowing his prey as quickly as he could. His fur was ruffled and a little windblown when he faced Mothpaw, a light, airy look gracing his features.

"You can take first shot!" he said, lowering himself to a proper fighting stance, legs poised for striking. His tail was pointed nearly parallel with the ground as he resisted the urge to let it fly loosely in the wind. He would need his balance for this spar.

Mothpaw ears pricked as he heard Shellpaw's pawsteps approaching, his whiskers rippled in amusement at his fellow apprentice's ruffled appearance. "Okay!" He chirped; before his eyes narrowed into a serious focus.

His thick fur masked some of his movement as he settled down into a balanced stance. Cautiously he stalked closer, eyes never leaving Shellpaw's still form. With a startling burst of speed, he faked a low swipe but instead attempted a strike from above with one of his massive paws, aiming to knock Shellpaw off balance.

Mothpaw used Play Blows, dealing 1 + 2 damage.

Anticipating a low blow, Shellpaw kicked his front paws up, just to fall directly into Mothpaw's trap. He let out a shocked "oof!" as he tripped off to the side. He regained his balance with a flick of his feathery tail, shaking off the attack. "You're good!" he said, more instinctively than anything else. He took a moment, pondering his next move. When he had helped Wolfstorm take down the eagle, it had been a matter of grabbing whatever he could and clawing the life out of it. There was a lot more to it when battling a cat. He mulled over his training as he silently considered his options

He was smaller that Mothpaw, but he had stamina behind him. He zipped around his opponent's flank, swinging his paw out at Mothpaw's hind leg and pulling it out, knocking him over. He rounded on the tom, tail sweeping in the air and ready to strike him again. "Gotcha!"

Mothpaw purred with satisfaction from his successful ploy, his satisfaction was cut short as Shellpaw yanked his leg out from under him. He let out a loud "Ooof!" as impacted the ground. With a snort he scrambled to his paws, whirling around to get his eyes back on Shellpaw, tailtip flicking in annoyance at his fall. Maybe he could try that same thing again but do it better?

Dropping low, Mothpaw prowled closer, fur trailing against the ground as he lowly growled. He again feinted a low strike, but, instead of striking from above, lunged forward. He ducked his head and turned, throwing his shoulder into Shellpaw to knock him over.

Mothpaw used Play Blows, dealing 1 + 1 damage.
