A Lovely hunt (Closed)

Dovepaw was sitting outside the apprentice den with a bored expression on her face. Her mentor, lilystream, was about to become a queen so couldn't train her anymore. Dovepaw kept feeling like she was falling behind and felt a little guilty for feeling like that. She should be happy for her mentor, kits were a big gift to the clan. Dovepaw looked around wondering if anyone else wanted to train with her.

Brightpaw stirred in her nest, stretching out for a moment before shaking herself and climbing to her paws. It was cold. She'd had a busy morning before settling down for a long nap but it would be good to go do something before the night brought on the more intense, bone-chilling cold. Padding out of the apprentice den with a yawn, she caught sight of Dovepaw sitting by herself. "Hey Dovepaw! What're you up to this chilly afternoon?"

Dovepaw looked to brightpaw with a small smile. "Im just sitting, my training has been put on hold." she mewed quietly to her friend. Dovepaw wondered why she didn't see much of her friend but didn't make to much of it, some cats were just busy.

Brightpaw tipped her head, "Oh? I'm sorry...", she paused a moment as she put it together, "Oh, right, Lilystream's your mentor!" She shook her head quickly with a laugh, "Well, I'm still sorry your training is being impacted." More kits was always a wonderful thing to keep Skyclan strong but Brightpaw knew that she would have been frustrated if her training was interrupted. Brightpaw flicked her short tail against Dovepaw's shoulder. "I was about to head out to hunt more before it gets any colder, would you wanna come? I'm not a warrior yet but I could try to give you some pointers! And it's way more fun to hunt with a friend!"

Dovepaw thought about it before nodding as she got to her paws. "Sure, lets see if a newbie like me can beat you." she mewed shaking her fluffy pelt before following brightpaw out of camp.

Brightpaw purred as they departed the camp, "You're on! Though in leaf-bare, hunting sometimes requires nearly as much luck as actual skill to actually find prey. I didn't have much luck this morning, but maybe the sun will draw some out." She led the way into a densely wooded area, little snow had penetrated the interlocking branches, but snow melt from the tops of trees sent periodic water droplets spattering to the forest floor. Brightpaw shook her head, wrinkling her nose as a droplet landed on her head. With a snort she lifted her head to scent the air, there weren't a lot of scents but it seemed a decent enough shot to actually catch something. The trees creaked ominously as the shifted in a cold breeze. "I think this might be a good spot, the trees provide protection from the worst of the cold and it should be easy enough to climb to unsuspecting birds if we hear them." She looked over to Dovepaw, eyes narrowing playfully, "You ready to start?"

Dovepaw followed after brightpaw with a smile on her face. Her thick pelt protected her from the water droplets which as she noticed brightpaw get wet, her pelt didnt. "yeah, I'm ready if you are." she smiled at her friend.

Brightpaw grinned before turning her senses outward, searching for any kind of prey. Other than the creaking trees and falling water droplets it was quiet. A couple distant birds occasionally called, but not near enough yet to bother tracking any further. The stale scent of squirrel piqued her interest, it was definitely old but didn't seem to have gone too far given the lack of trail. Maybe it was sheltering up one of these trees? She silently followed the smell, careful to avoid doing anything that could attract unwanted attention from her potential prey. Arriving at the base of a large pine tree, the scent seemed to stop. Brightpaw circled the tree a few times, checking that it didn't continue from a different spot. After a brief pause, she began to climb; sharp claws cutting into the rough bark. The climb was slow and only after she was some distance from the ground did she realize that squirrels could easily jump between branches to another tree, especially in such tight quarters. Grimacing at the thought of wasting effort, she kept going, if not a squirrel, maybe something else could be up here...

Glancing down, everything on the ground seemed very far away. Brightpaw's tail twitched nervously. She wasn't scared of heights this was just... Very far. She came to a stop at a notch in the tree. A little hollow where a branch once was burrowed inside. Tentatively she reached out a paw, stuck it inside the hole, and blindly lashed out feeling a soft whack as her she hit something. Hooking out her claws, Brightpaw tugged her paw free, dragging out a stunned and very confused squirrel. Without a moment of hesitation, Brightpaw killed it with a bite, lifting her prize and slowly began her long decent down the tree.

dovepaw watched as brightpaw climbed the tree and got a squirrel! She didn't think she could do that so she decided to find a scent on the ground. once she caught the scent of a rabbit she slowly followed the trail, once she was far enough behind that the rabbit didn't notice her, but close enough to get it she waited silently for the perfect moment. She pounced but midair their was a growl like sound, scaring the rabbit away. Dovepaw landed and stared with scared eyes Into the eyes of a predator!

As Brightpaw descended, she glanced around, catching a flash of white through the trees. Through the scent of squirrel in her mouth a foul stench filtered into her nose, one she hadn't scented with any amount of frequency. Badger! Dropping her catch, she leapt from the tree to see the massive creature all but already on top of Dovepaw. "Watch out!" She yowled, hoping to alert Dovepaw and distract the badger as she bolted towards her clanmate.

The call came a bit too late as the angry Badger had already lunged at Dovepaw, teeth snapping wildly.

Dovepaw screamed as she couldnt get away fast enough as the badger bit down on her. when he left go cause of brightpaw's yell she quickly slashed at its face before going to brightpaw, a little away from the danger. Her side burned with pain but she would fight, to pretect brightpaw and herself.

Fear coursed through Brightpaw as Dovepaw shrieked in pain, her warning having come too late to save Dovepaw from injury. Her paws pounded against the frozen ground, as she finally reached the white apprentice. She glared up at the creature, fur standing on end as she growled, hoping it would retreat after receiving injury.

The badger snarled as it turned on the now united apprentices, the scratches on it's face doing little but angering it further and not at all intimidated by the two young cats.

Taking a quick breath, not allowing herself to overthink it, Brightpaw leapt at the badger. She managed to go over its head, full of sharp, very angry teeth, and land on its back. Immediately biting and tearing at its flesh through the dense, greyscale coat. The stench was vile but the adrenaline coursing through her body kept her going.

Roaring in pain, the badger spun, trying to bite at the cat latched onto its back, but she was out of reach. It stumbled to the side before, with an enraged scream, twisting and slamming its body against one of the numerous pine trees.

Brightpaw let out a short gasp as the air was crushed out of her lungs. She slid off the badgers back, body falling limply to the ground as she lay stunned.

Dovepaw watched in fear as brightpaw didn't get up. She turned to the fox with an angry glare, no one cared to hurt her friend! She hissed as she lunged slashing across the Badgers face.

Even as the badger fled, Brightpaw lay still. Dazed and disoriented from being crushed against a tree. Her whole body ached as fear and adrenaline continued to course through her. After a few ragged breaths, she managed to collect herself enough to unsteadily drag herself to her paws. Immediately her thoughts turned to Dovepaw, was she okay?! Brightpaw blinked as finally looked over at the white apprentice. "Dovepaw, are you alright?"

dovepaw looked down at her red stained fur on her shoulder and grimaced. "I could be better, lets head back so we can get healed." She mewed wincing as she padded back to camp.

Brightpaw nodded wearily, the blood stood out starkly against Dovepaw's white pelt which alone was alarming but... Given it had been a badger and she was still standing, it could have been much worse. They'd been lucky.

Brightpaw's entire body ached and when she moved too quickly her vision blurred around the edges. She slowly padded after Dovepaw, pausing to grab the squirrel she'd caught when she caught sight of it lying where she'd dropped it, heading back to camp.
