A Family Hunt in the Trees

Breezebranch stretched her paws out luxuriously and yawned. It was early dawn, the dawn patrol just having left. Sorrelwing asked her to lead a hunting patrol, so she'd decided to turn in into a family activity. After all, Icepaw had been a little distant lately, and the white star he'd seen still greatly troubled her. Mudpaw, Lilypaw, and Swiftpaw would join them, too, she decided. Lionflame would be busy, and Acornpaw was on the dawn patrol, and Silverstar was the one leading the dawn patrol, so of course Maplepaw was with them, as was Briarshine. Padding over the the apprentices den, her soft voice, filled with love and awe for her kis, she called out to them. "Mudpaw, Lilypaw, Icepaw! Lovelies, we're going hunting. Mudpaw, be a dear and get Swiftpaw, would you? I think it would be nice for us four to go hunting." She mewed tenderly, the amount of love she carried for them not being able to be fully expressed in her voice.

As she waited for her kits to come out, she licked her shoulder fur, where a bit of twig clung to her.

Mudpaw yawned, and flicked her ears as her mother cat her name. "Okay... Mom.." Her sentence was interrupted by a yawn and she padded over to the lithe brown shape of Swiftpaw, gently nudging her. "Swift, hunting." She mewed to the she-cat in her normal fashion of talking slowly and emphasizing words, as she did so frequently talking with Swiftpaw, her deaf sister.

Lilypaw nodded, joining her mother. She loved her so much, and just wanted to be approved by her. She knew her mother didn’t like Smoke, but she hoped that it didn’t affect Breezebranch’s feelings about her. She wasn’t allowed out of camp alone, but Breezebranch was a warrior, so she go with her. She stood next to her, and mewed quietly, ”Hi mom.” Wiating for her siblings to join her.

Swiftpaw woke to Mudpaw telling her it was time to hunt. She yawned with a little stretch before padding after Mudpaw and lilypaw. She nodded to her mother before grooming her mess of brown fur while she waited for her other siblings. She never got the chance to do that much family hunting and since Shrikepaw was busy she was happy to come along.

Icepaw lifted his head at hearing Breezebranch call his name. Turning his mismatched eyes toward his adoptive mother, the snow furred tom stood and stretched his limbs before moving to join her. He had been especially quiet lately, more so than usual. The vision of the cold star had plagued his thoughts since the day he'd run from the camp. It had... ignited something within him, though he wasn't sure what. Pushing the thought from his mind, Icepaw waited for his siblings to join them. He hasn't been allowed to become a warrior with Lionpaw and now his younger siblings were likely to pass him as well. He knew it was because the clan leader wanted him to stop isolating himself, but icepaw didn't know how to explain what was happening to him. Not without sounding crazy anyway.

Bump!

Giving each of her kits a loving nuzzle, Breezebranch turned and padded out of the camp, into the lush green forest where they called home. No matter how many time she saw it, she still was mesmerized that such a beautiful forest could be called home by her and her family. "I trust you all slept well?" She purred, starting the conversation that was oh-so-easy with her kits. "Especially you, Mudpaw. You snore louder than any cat ought to!" The teasing tone in her voice was accompanied by a flick on the ear of her youngest.

Noticing a sparrow pecking around the roots of a beech trees, Breezebranch waved her tail for quietness, slowly creeping up on the bird. The bird waas focused on a worm, and didn't see her until far too late. Taking the life from the delicate creature, she murmured her thanks to StarClan for providing them with this life.

Mudpaw followed her mother and littermates through the forest, sticking her salmon tongue out as her mother gently teased her. "Guess I inherited more than a name from papa!" She retorted, giggling. As her mother veered off to get a sparrow, she saw a young squirrel. Lionflame's favorite! Eyes shining, Mudpaw leaped into the tree, branch from branch, until she was directly above it. She landed on the squirrel as she pounced, killing it before leaping out of the tree.

Lilypaw nodded, and laughed. ”Mudpaw does snore very loudly! But yeah, I slept good!” she giggled, recalling the previous night. She saw a small robin and started to stalk it quietly, then leapt, trying to catch it before it flew away. She caught it and killed it quickly, then added it to the prey pile.

Swiftpaw watched as everyone started hunting and saw how fun it was. She wanted to join in so when she spotted a squirrel she was ecstatic. She silently bunched up her hind legs and when the squirrel was low enough she pounced. The squirrel tried to run but she was too fast and easily caught it. She silently killed in then climbed down to the rest of her family with a big smile.

Icepaw watched his family for a moment, then slunk a short distance away. He didn't want Mudpaw scaring away anything that might be nearby. Satisfied, he dropped into a hunting crouch and sniffed for anything to catch. The scent of prey wafted past his nose and he sprang at the mouse. His claws sank into his prey and he quickly killed with a bite to the neck before heading back to camp with his prize.

Breezebranch grinned as she realized the prey pile was quickly adding up. "Oh my! Since when did you all become such wonderful hunters? Well, you could feed all of SkyClan yourselves!" The broad shouldered tortoiseshell-tabby purred. As her youngest called to her, she grinned, seeing that Mudpaw's wonder never faded. A pretty flower had struck her daughter's attention this time. She was about to comment, when a scent hit her nose, and she immediately ran forward.

"Mudpaw, look out!" She hissed, knocking her kit out of the way as a fox rammed straight into where Mudpaw was a second ago and where Breezebranch now stood. Breezebranch raked her claws down the brute's back, a queen's fury being unleashed on the unlucky fox.

Mudpaw stopped as she found a beautiful bright orange flower, fading red at its tips. A rant was about to tumble from her maw when her mother screeched, shoved her aside, and proceeded to be attacked by a fox. "Lily, Ice, Swift! Fox! It's got momma!" She screeched, making wild tails gestures to Swiftpaw, as she hissed at the fox.

Breezebranch shoves her kit aside as she takes the damage from Full Force Tackle! She retaliates and uses Claws & Teeth on the fox, dealing 7 ( 4 + 3 ) damage!
Mudpaw is saved by her mother from the fox! Mudpaw shouts a warning, alerting Swiftpaw, Lilypaw, and Icepaw of the danger, despite the fact they probably smelled the fox..
The fox tried to attack a smaller cat, but instead rams head first into a larger cat dealing 10 damage!

Lilypaw smiled, relaxing a bit. Soon, the calmness was interrupted. A fox attacked their mother! Lilypaw grolwed angrily. If that creature thought it could just attack them like that..This was the most anger the sweet apprentice had ever felt. She could feel her blood boiling. She scraped at the predator with her claws, fury taking over her. She had to keep her family safe!
