The Oddest Thing. [CLOSED]

Oddpaw and her friend Scorchpaw had decided to go hunting, without a warrior, again. The slunk through the clearing chatting. It was obvious they were growing closer. 'Maybe they would become more than friends?' Oddpaw thought to herself, then quickly brushed off the thought. She was very ugly, who could love somecat with a mug like hers?

She was happy to be by his side at least for now. The crouched together in unison searching for prey, but Oddpaw would find that her eyes kept on trailing to the apprentice. There were many prey smells in the Moor, it was ripe for the picking, she shuffled around on the floor trying to find a worthy catch, hopefully something to impress her friend.

Scorchpaw eyed the trees around them. His eyes went towards Oddpaw as he noticed her glancing back. They became really close, didn't they? Would they... get closer? When Oddpaw was looking away, he shook that idea away. No, quick to scare ol' Scorchpaw? No way...

Instead, he took a few sniffs at the air, trying to track down some sort of prey. A small bit of movement caught his eyes. A shrew was emerging from the roots of the tree. Scorchpaw smirked and quickly dropped to the ground in a hunting crouch. He then swiftly pounced onto the shrew, his paw sending it onto the ground and killing it instantly. He picked up the shrew and smiled towards Oddpaw.

Oddpaw jumped at Scorchpaws pounce. "Great kill! I didn't even see it, or smell it." Oddpaw blushed under her fur, Scorchpaw was such a good hunter. Her eyes trailed off, she slunk close to the ground, she tried to imagine where her prey would be hiding. She finally scented something, hopefully something worth catching.

She saw a scrawny mouse digging in the dirt. She crept closer until she sprang on it and before it had a chance to escape she killed it with one swift bite. She didn't think it was enough to impress Scorchpaw but at least she'd caught something. She smiled at the tom and wiggled the mouse around in her muzzle jokingly before burying it.

Scorchpaw's eyes widened at the compliment. "T-thanks..." he replied, smiling through the shrew. He found a nice spot among the tree roots to bury it in, so he did so. "Not a bad catch yourself," he looked towards Oddpaw's mouse. Then, the apprentice took a few paces away in order to try and scent new prey. He spotted a small snake in the shrubs. Snakes were really creepy... Freaked out, he recklessly pounced at the creature, which hissed in shock before sliding out of his paws and darting out into the shrubs. Scorchpaw turned towards Oddpaw again, "Ah well, can't get 'em all."

Oddpaw chuckled quietly. She always appreciated Scorchpaw's laid back attitude. Suddenly Oddpaw smelt something delicious nearby, excited she got on all fours and glided over. The undergrowth in front of her rustled slightly.

She landed on a huge, bloated toad. Oddpaw hated toads but it'd be good eating for the Clan, so she bit down on it. Killing it instantly, she gagged at the toad-slime that had gotten into her mouth. Resorting to never putting her mouth on such a disgusting creature again she kicked it with her paws to a spot she could bury it then shivered.

"Yeah, toad skin does taste weird, huh..? It's still a nice catch, though..." he chuckled slightly. Oddpaw was really good at hunting. Fighting as well, her ear only proved that. He then turned around to try and scent anything else nearby. He smelled a familiar scent of mouse, then crawled across tree roots to see one eating a small nut. He quickly pounced onto it and dealt the killing bite. Scorchpaw picked it up and walked to where his shrew was, smiling towards Oddpaw.

Oddpaw laughed and patted him softy with sheathed paws, she had the urge to spring a surprise attack on her friend and tackle him to the ground but decided against it. They were hunting after all. She lowered herself to the ground, darting along mouth wide for any prey scents.

Oddpaw saw the squirrel before she smelt it, she unsheathed her claws in anticipation and excitement. She felt her tail twitching uncontrollably, she launched at the squirrel. Dispatching of it immediately, with a single swift blow. She dropped it at Scorchpaws paws smugly before covering it over with some dirt.

"We'll be the best hunters in the clan, eh?" Scorchpaw said as Oddpaw caught another piece of prey. There may not be much left around this area, so he padded off, mouth open slightly in order to try and detect more prey. He caught sight of a frog hanging out by a small puddle of mud. Scorchpaw crouched down, then sprang over and caught the frog. He did get some mud on his fur in the process. As he went back to put it with the rest of the prey, he laughed, "Guess I've got more cleaning to do later..."

"Ewww!" Oddpaw laughed, slightly cringing at the thought of mud in her long fur. She was about to crouch and search for some more prey when a nasty stench washed over her. She glanced at Scorchpaw, confused, trying to figure out what it was when it dawned on her. Badger!

Unfortunately it was too little too late, the badger had found them. They must've wandered too close to it's set because it looked ANGRY. It's broad shoulders and black pelt glistening in the setting sun. It lifted one heavy paw and swung it at Oddpaw, striking her.

Oddpaw was dazed but not knocked out, she felt faint as she unsheathed her claws and prepared for battle.

Scorchpaw drew in a gasp as a badger came after them and attacked his clanmate. "Oddpaw!" he shouted. Legs shaking, he rushed over to the badger and clawed its flank.

The badger snarled, it dug it's claws into the ground and furiously screeched before charging into Oddpaw. Crushing her underneath it's paws.

Oddpaw gasped in pain as she struggled to her legs. She tried to scratch at the badger weakly.

Scorchpaw flinched as Oddpaw was attacked. Paws trembling from the fear that was forcibly taking over his body, he kept trying to attack the badger. He bit down on the badger's shoulder, claws latched onto its pelt.

The badger realising it had lost against the two apprentices turned and fled into the forest. Oddpaw was about to give chase but her legs wouldn't move. She felt a cold seeping feeling, coming from her back and down her legs. Looking down she saw blood pooling around her paws. The badger must've nicked something important with it's claws when it charged over her, she realised quickly that she was losing too much blood.

She looked at Scorchpaw, he was fading in and out. She felt cold all over, she couldn't die, not without telling him how she felt. "I lo-" she started, too late. Everything went black as she saw the ground rapidly approaching.

Scorchpaw didn't hesitate after the badger fled, and immediatly rushed towards Oddpaw. He stopped by the forming pool of blood and stared down at her in pure horror. As she collapsed to the ground, he gagged on the lump in his throat. "Oddpaw, I-" he choked, tears starting to form in his eyes. Scorchpaw's ears went down as he hunched over in a feeble attempt to settle the sick feeling in his stomach, "Please don't go..."

Oddpaw awoke to find that it was night, the stars in Silverpelt gleamed fiercely. She sat in a clearing in the middle of a forest she didn't recognise, the moonlight illuminated the clearing. It fell in waves lighting up everything, there were no shadows.

"Badger" she whispered, she looked over her pelt. There were no cuts or scrapes, nothing to indicate there had ever been a badger attack. She felt overwhelmed "I must be dead." as she spoke her voice echoed around the clearing.

"Not quite but you gave it your best shot" A loud male voice echoed back. It was only then that Oddpaw noticed a large tom in the centre of the clearing. He sat there proudly, stoic and unmoving his fur was black with white flecks scattered throughout and it rippled with starlight. She stared at him, surprised by his sudden appearance "Are you a warrior of StarClan?" she asked, nervously. His scent was strange but somehow familiar. The starry tom nodded "So, I'm not dead? Then how am I here? And who are you?". The tom let out a short deep chuckle before responding to Oddpaw.

"No, you are not dead but you're on the verge of dying. That is how we're able to talk. As for me? I'm the kin of your kin, Briarspot." He stopped for a moment, judging Oddpaws reaction before continuing "We haven't much time, I come bearing a warning. Listen Oddpaw and listen well. It's time to take your final bow, as warrior have before. Oddface's hour will be over soon for love shall spell your doom". The tom bowed his head and began to walk off.

"Wait!" Oddpaw called "What does it mean?!" but her grandfather had already gone, leaving her with more questions than answers.
